Charity bridge night held in memory of Pat Finn, Dec. 2013

On Sunday 20th October, the parish hall in the small Tipperary village of Ballycahill witnessed a fantastic turn-out for a charity bridge night held in memory of the late Patrick (Pat) Finn. Pat was a native of Ballycahill, four miles outside Thurles, and he lived there for most of his life.   From 1987 until his death on 20 August 2013, Pat held the position of Chairman of the 1974 Bridge Club in Thurles. Pat was a superb bridge player, winning many competitions over the years in the 3 Bridge clubs in Thurles. Some of his finest achievements in bridge included winning the Co. Tipperary Pairs championship in 2011 (with Paddy Gleeson), the Intermediate “A” Pairs (with Jim Stokes) in 2011, the Co. Tipperary “Team of Four” competition in 1994 (with Jackie Cahill, Patsy Durack & Chris O’Sullivan) and two President’s Prizes in 1980 and 2010. His dedication to bridge, and to the 1974 club in particular, was obvious to all who knew him. Pat was particularly welcoming of new members to the club, whatever their level of experience or ability. Indeed, he took enormous pleasure in teaching novice players and in recent years he ran very popular classes for beginners in Thurles and Borrisoleigh. Thanks to Pat’s tremendous patience and enthusiasm, the game of bridge is now very much alive and well in this part of Co. Tipperary.

Pat passed away peacefully after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. He leaves behind his beloved wife Bernie, his two sons David and Andrew, brothers Jim and Denis and sister Mary (Healy) as well as a great many relatives and friends. The charity bridge night was held in honour of Pat and to raise funds for the North Tipperary Hospice who cared for him in his last hours. There were 136 people in attendance, playing bridge across 34 tables and raising a total of €3,175 in aid of the North Tipperary Hospice. The funds were raised through a combination of entry fee and raffle tickets for a prize draw, with prizes generously sponsored by local businesses. There were 3 sections on the night – beginners, intermediate and advanced. The winners were Caroline Coffey & Anne Kennedy (beginner’s section), Anette Browne & Hannie Devanney (intermediate section) and Jackie Cahill & Bill Dowling (advanced section). The event was organised superbly by Kay Skehan of Killinan, Thurles, assisted by Pat’s bridge friends and his family who were also in attendance on the night. Tea, coffee, hot and cold food and cakes were served after the bridge and a wonderful evening was had by all. The fantastic turnout and funds raised are a testament to Pat’s popularity, his enormous contribution to bridge in Co. Tipperary and the esteem in which he was held.
